Beatrice Mayes Institute (BMI) is a fifty-six year old K-8 school located in Third Ward.  It is consistently one of the top performing historically black schools state wide.  BMI students, faculty and staff are almost 100% black.  Beatrice Mayes Institute is currently in a campaign to construct a building enabling it to move out of its dated facility and to double the number of kids served from 400 to 800.
